Center for Learning, Behavior & Development 2sCoachella Valley Lighthouse has proven effectiveness in student academic gains by providing data regarding academic progress achieved by the students that CVL supports and providing clear evidence that instruction is aligned with Common Core state standards (CCSS). Through academic planning and extensive data monitoring, CVL’s intervention model and standards-based approach ensures that individual student needs are addressed. Because of our documented record of effectiveness, CVL received approval from the California State Board of Education to be a Supplemental Education Services (SES) provider for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years on March 2014.

WHAT ARE SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (SES)?

Supplemental educational services are additional academic instruction designed to increase the academic achievement of students in schools that have not met State targets for increasing student achievement (adequate yearly progress or AYP).

The term “supplemental educational services” refers to free extra academic help, such as tutoring or remedial help, that is provided to students in subjects such as reading, language arts, and math.

This extra help can be provided before or after school, or on weekends. States must maintain a list of approved providers across the state organized by the school district or districts they serve, from which parents may select. States must also promote maximum participation by supplemental educational services providers to ensure that parents have as many choices as possible.

WHEN ARE CHILDREN ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES?

Students from low-income families who remain in Title I schools that fail to meet state standards for more than one academic year are eligible to receive supplemental educational services. School districts may prioritize how funding is disbursed.

ARE PARENTS NOTIFIED ABOUT SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES?

Yes. School districts are required to provide annual notice to parents of eligible children about the availability of services and information on the approved providers. Contact your local school district regarding your notice information or visit the links below.

CAN PARENTS CHOOSE PROVIDERS FOR TUTORING AND OTHER SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES?

Yes, parents of eligible children can choose from the list of state-approved providers. When parents have made their selection, the local education agency must then contract with that provider to deliver the services.
